OARnet’s Schopis with OSU group headed to East Africa 
Experts seek to narrow Information and Communication Technology gaps

Paul Schopis’ deep understanding of technology and the powerful resources it provides and enables may just help save lives in East Africa.

Schopis, interim director of OARnet, left for East Africa on Friday as part of a weeklong project titled “Bridging the Gap in eCapacity for Global Health Research and Training in East Africa.” Schopis is part of a group being led by project director Dr. Wondwossen Abebe Gebreyes, director of Global Health Programs for the College of Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University.

Shah elected to additional term for Internet2 Board of Trustees

WASHINGTON, D.C., November 4, 2015 – Pankaj Shah, executive director of the Ohio Academic Resources Network (OARnet) and the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC), has been elected to an additional term for Internet2’s Board of Trustees, according to a press release issued today. Internet2 is the operator of the most advanced infrastructure for research and higher education.

Internet2 Focused Technical Workshop helps engineers improve network performance

And with that, Brian Tierney, group leader of the ESnet Advanced Network Technologies Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, kicked off a two-day workshop on perfSONAR. The tool helps network engineers and developers monitor and measure network performance – and limit network failures – from its starting point to its end point.

Shah is serving the term of retired Board Member Joe Freddoso, former CEO of MCNC.

Distribution Program Expands Value-Add Resources Available to OARnet Members

The Ohio Academic Resources Network (OARnet) has teamed with VMware and Carahsoft to establish a distribution program. This value-added service diversifies how OARnet members can access an aggregate purchasing agreement between OARnet, the Ohio Board of Regents and VMware that provides significant discounts for software virtualization licenses.

State to move onto OARnet backbone

OARnet and the State of Ohio recently finalized an agreement for OARnet to provide the network backbone for the State and its various agencies. The agreement between OARnet/Ohio Board of Regents and Department of Administrative Services will add nearly 2,300 end-sites to the network for $3.2 million per year.

Aggregating the State of Ohio’s broadband and networking needs to the existing OARnet client base benefits all stakeholders. With the recent 100 Gbps upgrade, there is ample bandwidth to meet everyone’s needs.

Ohio’s research and education network and several colleges and universities in the state are piloting projects to allow K-12 and community college students, faculty and staff to access multiple online resources with the credentials issued by their institution.

The projects are part of a national initiative of the Quilt, a national coalition of advanced regional networks for research and education, and Internet2, an advanced networking consortium led by the research and education community.
