Voice and Video over IP (VVoIP) Traffic Studies

We have conducted several studies to characterize and model traffic behavior of the three classes of VVoIP applications: (i) One-way (e.g. Video streaming), (ii) Interactive (e.g. Videoconferencing) and (iii) Interactive + Control (e.g. IPTV, Tele-microscopy). The characterization and modeling primarily involved studying packet-size distributions, inter-packet times and Mean Opinion Score rankings. The ultimate purpose of the above studies was to understand how the VVoIP end-user Quality of Experience (QoE) was affected by different device (e.g. codec, loss-concealment scheme) and network (e.g. bandwidth, jitter) factors. To obtain data for analysis, we setup several LAN and Internet VVoIP application testbeds. One of our notable testbeds produced a collection of over 300 videoconferencing traffic traces from 26 sites in 14 countries. We are currently leveraging our traffic characterization and modeling studies for developing objective video quality assessment techniques that enable auto-assessment of end-user QoE without actual human intervention.
