Emergency Web Hosting

Campus web sites have become the focal point of information for college and university communities around the globe. This is especially true during and immediately after an unforeseen crisis where sharp increases in traffic can overwhelm campus web servers, fire or weather may knock out power or careless construction disrupts network access. This may be the result of fire, weather conditions or other campus incidents that adversely affect the network.

With these debilitating scenarios in mind, OARnet now offers participating clients an Emergency Webhosting Service. Under the agreement, OARnet will store and deploy a basic campus web presence on a remote web server in the event that normal web operations are disrupted. The 24x7 service is hosted from a powerful, dedicated web server that resides on the network backbone and is located in the State of Ohio Computer Center.

Details:

• Clients will prepare an emergency web page or presence with the sole function of informing their constituencies of vital information, such as support numbers or advisories to avoid dangers and/or inconveniences.
• One gigabyte of server storage is available per agreement.
• Clients will have direct, secure and encrypted access to upload messages to the OARnet server.
• Only authorized individuals from the institution are allowed to engage the emergency service by contacting the OARnet Networking Operations Center with a password.
• The service will be deployed by implementing an IP intercept, which will redirect traffic to the emergency website. The service is expected to require a maximum of two hours for full implementation, which is much quicker than a DNS redirect solution.
• In the event of a particularly crippling power outage or network communications outage, OARnet will establish limited support to update information for the client.
• Clients will be charged a one-time $250 installation fee and a $250 yearly recurring fee.
