What is OARtech, and how does it operate?

1. What is OARnet?
The Ohio Board of Regents created the Ohio Academic Resources Network (OARnet) in 1987 to provide Ohio researchers with their first "online" access. Today, the OARnet network provides more than 1,850 miles of fiber-optic backbone and, as part of the state’s Strategic Plan for Higher Education, serves as the integrated technology infrastructure organization for the University System of Ohio, as well as the network for K-12. 2.  How does your organization become an OARnet member?
Eligible degree-granting institutions of higher education in Ohio that are recognized by the Ohio Board of Regents can become members of the OARnet network. All Ohio academic institutions are encouraged to participate, and other Ohio organizations are encouraged to participate in connection with their research and their academic endeavors. Read more.

3. How often do the OARnet members meet?
The OARnet Management team organizes two meetings a year for their members.

6. Does OARnet offer access to Internet2?
Yes. OARnet offers access to Internet 2, a non-profit consortium that develops and deploys advanced network applications and technologies, for education and high-speed data transfer purposes. Internet2 access is offered to various educational and research entities based on their need for bandwidth. Read more.

The OARnet Technical Committee (OARtech) is a technical advisory committee that serves as a liaison between the State of Ohio internetwork service provider, OARnet, and the CIO Advisory Board. Read more.
